Relevant Health and Safety Information

  • The safety of AYE Abroad students is our highest priority. Our in-country staff is well-trained and knowledgeable about the terrain and will assist our students throughout their stay.
  • Upon arrival, students will be received by our host university officials and AYE in-country director.
  • AYE will clearly define its responsibilities, host university responsibilities, and that of the student.
  • Students will go through a mandatory pre-departure orientation and a compulsory in-country orientation reviewing health, safety, legal, environmental, political and cultural conditions in host country.
  • Students will be housed on campus at the International Hostel with 24-hour security and all amenities to make students’ stay safe and comfortable.
  • Students will receive an emergency contact card once in Ghana that will have calling information of our home office, in-country office and Host University.
  • AYE will fund a comprehensive insurance plan that covers medical, accident, baggage and other emergencies. Students are required to have a comprehensive insurance upon departure.   • In addition to international student insurance, students will be signed unto the National Health Insurance Scheme to ensure immediate medical assistance in the event of medical emergency. It is also very important to inform AYE about any pre-existing health conditions that may impact you during your stay abroad.
  • Aside from enrolling our students in the NHIS, students will have direct access to an AYE assigned professional medical doctor who will provide all medical assistances to students without visiting the hospital.
  • Students will be registered through the US Department of State Travel Registration program.  This means that the US embassies/consulates in the host country will be aware of our students’ presence and will be able to contact our students in the event of an emergency. Smart Travel Enrollment Program (STEP)
The Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) is a free service to allow U.S. citizens and nationals traveling abroad to enroll their trip with the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate.


  • Receive important information from the Embassy about safety conditions in your destination country, helping you make informed decisions about your travel plans.
  • Help the U.S. Embassy contact you in an emergency, whether natural disaster, civil unrest, or family emergency.
  • Help family and friends get in touch with you in an emergency.

Emergency Information

Our students will be housed on campus in hostels with maximum security and protection. Once in the host country, students will be provided an emergency contact card and in-country safety guidelines during an orientation with the host university. AYE in country personnel will also provide additional guidelines. However, in the event of an emergency, students are highly advised to immediately reach out to our in-country director for immediate assistance. In adverse situations, students must follow the in-country emergency protocol provided by AYE and the host university during orientation.
